CHRISTMAS DRINK DRIVING RESULTS PUBLISHED

Over 9000 people were arrested across England and Wales during the Christmas crack down by the British police on drunk driving. With 43 forces involved in the operation, officers managed to breathalyse 183,397 drivers (25,000 more than last year) between 1st December and 1st January with 9,148 leading to arrests. The proportion of over the limit drivers was about the same as last year with those under 25 being most likely to fail the test.
'Drink and drug drive collisions not only devastate the lives of victims and their families, but they also ruin the lives of the offenders,' said Chief Constable Mick Giannasi, of Gwent Police. 'Driving under the influence of any substance, whether it is alcohol or drugs is not acceptable. Alcohol and drugs can impair your ability to judge speed and distances, reduce concentration and delay reaction speed.'
Commenting on the published result road safety minister Jim Fitzpatrick said 'This isn't just a message for Christmas, it's for every day of the year. Drink driving ruins lives. In 2007, 460 people died and families across Britain were devastated - don't do it,'
