BULGARIA IN ART COVER UP

BULGARIA IN ART COVER UP Sunday January 25th, 2009
ImageAfter weeks of embarrassment Bulgaria has finally got its own way and had its section of an art installation covered with a black cloth. The problem first arose when the eight tonne artwork was hung in the atrium of the European Council building, Brussels. The Entropa is a giant ribald depiction of the 27 nations who are members of the EU. Bulgaria has protested about being represented by a squat down toilet and has successfully campaigned to get themselves covered up.
Czech artist David Cerny appears somewhat bemused by all the fuss. “It is a pity that it was not understood as a joke. I don’t know if you can call it censorship, I think it is oversensitivity,” He added he has already been approached by three art buyers keen to purchase Entropa after it is moved from the European council and has completed a sixth month stint in Prague.
The artwork has already been criticised for its depiction of masturbating Italian football players and German autobahns arranged in a shape resembling a swastika. It was also commissioned by the Czech government to be a collective piece from artists all over the EU, but was in fact made by Mr Cerny and a few of his friends. Despite attempts to cover up the scam by inventing biographies for several of the bogus artists, Cerny was rumbled and has agreed to pay back £46000 in public funds.
To add irony to injury Czech President Vaclav Klaus is also the brunt of Cerny’s joke, when the artist decided to include some of his Euro-sceptic comments in the Czech section of Entropa. Klaus has written to the presidency of the EU calling for the exhibit to be publicly disavowed.
