20 PENCE WITH NO DATE Tuesday June 30th, 2009
ImageNEW COINS WORTH 250 TIMES FACE VALUE
Checking your change at the checkout could prove quite profitable if predictions by coin experts are to believed. That freshly minted 20p piece could be worth up to £50. It has emerged that the Royal Mint has produced a batch of the newly designed 20p without a date. They have accidentally matched up the old heads with the new tails making it the first undated British coin to enter circulation in over 300 years.
They estimate between 50,000 and 200,000 of the coins have entered circulation. A statement from the Royal Mint said, 'The Royal Mint can confirm that a small number of new design 20 pence coins have been incorrectly struck using the obverse from the previous design, resulting in these coins having no date… The issue has now been resolved and the Royal Mint would like to reassure members of the public that these coins are legal tender.'
That may well be the case but you’re hardly likely to put one of them towards the price of a loaf!
