LANDLUBBERThe term used, often insultingly, to describe a person more at home on dry land than at sea is often, and mistakenly, thought to be a distortion of ‘land lover.’ In truth ‘lubber’ is an old slang word that means clumsy or uncoordinated. Hence ‘land lubber’ really means someone who is awkward or uncomfortable at sea.
