HARD AND FASTThe phrase used to describe a rule that is rigidly adhered to or a truth that is beyond doubt or debate originates from the nautical term used to describe a ship that is firmly beached on shore. In other words a ship that is essentially immovable. By the early 19th century it had taken on its figurative meaning and entered into popular use.
