The name given to Sailor’s personal effects is derived from the Flemish town of Duffel, near Antwerp where they made rough woollen cloth which was used to in the manufacture of sailors clothing. Hence the bags that sailors used to carry their belongings were named Duffel Bags or Duffle Bags.
