Sark, the fourth smallest of the Channel Islands, is situated just six miles from Guersey, reached by regular ferries. Jersey is further away, but linked to Sark by daily boats in summer. The island is unique, the last feudal state in the western world. There are no cars on Sark; transport is by bicycle or horse and carriage. Visitors can tour the island at a leisurely pace in a carriage and enjoy the wealth of wild flowers, birds and butterflies. Sark's spell is cast as soon as the visitor travels up the harbour hill to the pleteau, high above the sea. The narrow lanes, flower-studded fields and ever present birdsong delight the eye and enchant the ear. Magnificent cliffs sheltering sandy beaches promise idyllic days by the sea, and artists find something to paint wherever they look.
