Windermere Information

WINDERMERE
At over ten miles long and 220ft deep, not only is Windermere England’s biggest lake it is arguably the most attractive. One of the country’s premier tourist attractions, Windermere has so much to offer that whole books have been written on the subject. From the spectacular scenery to the magnificent sailing opportunities the area combines, outdoor pursuits and sophistication perfectly. For yachtsmen it is the number one spot in the UK, boasting registration of over 10,000 boats. The marine services are superb and there is a fantastic spirit amongst the sailing fraternity. Windermere is probably also one of the friendliest places you’ll ever visit in the UK. The myriad pubs and restaurants located around its shoreline are all of excellent quality and offer hospitality second to none. From Windermere town itself to the bustling resort of Bowness, the quaint attractiveness of Hawkshead to the lovely village atmosphere of Ambleside there are surprises everywhere. And you are never more than a few minutes from awe-inspiring mountainous countryside. Discover the magic that inspired Beatrix Potter, visit grand mansions, indulge yourself in river adventures and lose yourself in the vast areas of tranquil, beautiful wilderness.
There is accommodation to suit one and all. The camping is excellent and indoor accommodation ranges from the friendliest B&Bs you could wish to find to Majestic four star hotels. It’s also very easy to get to and the area is easy to navigate. There is plenty to do for all ages with a busy calendar of year round events just to make things even more appealing. Be it culture, good food, sailing, countryside, relaxation, romance or entertainment, Windermere has it in spades.

Thinking of moving my boat to the Lakes, probably Windermere, she draws just under 2 metres and is 38 feet in length, are there marinas that can compensate this or will i need a swinging mooring ?

Hi Stuart

We have a 30 foot bavaria in Aquatics marina with 2 metre + keel and we just get in and out at low water but deep water berths are very limited. I dont think any other marina on Windermere could take your required depth. probably best idea would be a swinging mooring but your length maybe a problem?

Hi Steve F
Thanks for the advice. We have however decided to cruise Western Scotland(Largs Kip Craobh Oban Etc) this year..we did have a look at Windermere but were quite surprised by the prices, both in the marinas and the local restaurants etc.we found it a delightful place but we have to be careful with our limited budget.
Hope you have a great season.

Just had a lovely meal at the Chickory on Glebe road Bowness, I think you should make your visitors aware of this place as we found it a refreshing change to a lot of the run of the mill cafe/restaurants that are about these days.(Nice looking staff too)

Can you moor up at Beech hill overnight on the pontoon there? if so is there a charge and how much?

If you moor up at Stoors Hall and you draught is more than 1.5 metres be wary of a rock near the jetty...It is not "marked" I think someone should inform them about this as it has certainly put us off visiting in our yacht...

Having a meal in the Ship Inn watching all the boats blow about in this storm.I know its Christmas time but is there no staff on hand to tend to these boats as they seem to be banging around a fair bit.looks great from here ,but wouldn't want to moor one there if that's the kind of protection they get.you probably won't publish this post because its not complementary but I think people should be aware of the lack of attention to their boats when they are not present.

Good luck to all the 10 x Marathon runners..If you do one marathon its an achievement, but to do what these guys are doing is amazing, hope you earn plenty for your charities.
