One of Britain's finest stretches of coast, with cliffs, fine bays and safe sandy beaches interspersed with attractive villages,Whitby has been a port for more than 1,000 years and today is still a seafarer's town.
The narrow streets and alleys climbing down to the quayside still bustle as they have done for centuries, and as folklore and tradition are very much part of the Whitby scene visitors soon find themselves involved.
Film and television producers have also discovered Whitbys charm. As well as the ever popularYorkshire television series Heartbeat,Warner brothers recently used Whitby as its main location for the film 'Possession' staring Gwyneth Poultrow.
From the towns centuries old streets, I 99 steps lead up to the parish Church of St Mary whose church yard inspired Bram Stoker to write his world famous novel Dracula.
