Opened in 1948, and nowadays run 'with gusto' by its owner, Elizabeth Perrée, this 'wonderful little hotel with wonderful food' has a loyal following. 'Stylish, idiosyncratic', it stands in 'lovely' grounds, in a quiet southern corner of the island, reached by an isthmus; cows graze in an adjacent field. Its white walls are fronted by flowers; indoors are low ceilings and oak beams. Standards are 'consistently high'. 'The enthusiastic, young, multi-ethnic staff all seemed to want us to have fun.' Canapés at the bar (where a fire burns on cold days) precede dinner in the candlelit restaurant. Chef Colin Day's dishes include saddle of venison with a fricassée of oyster mushrooms. There is a separate lobster menu. Many ingredients come from the home farm. Breakfasts can start with champagne, and they include freshly cooked 'Sark Breakfast' (porridge with cream; eggs, sausages, kippers, etc). The tea room serves 'very good lunches'. The bedrooms are charming and some are reached through a door in the bar; some spacious ones are in cottages. You should pack a dress or tie for dinner. This year (2010) Stocks Hotel is undergoing a complete refurbishment and will be re-opening in spring 2011 as Sark's premier hotel accommodation.

The hotel remains in private ownership by three local families and is still personally run by Paul Armorgie.
