Formerly an exclusive getaway for wealthy Glasgow merchant’s families and a hideaway for smugglers, Rhu nestles on the east bank of Gare Loch. Today it plays host to a far broader variety of visitor, and families from all walks of life go there to take in the picturesque surroundings and wonderful views. Rhu is also very popular with the yachting and boating fraternity who enjoy the freewheeling spirit of the area. They are well served too, with plentiful moorings, marine services and most significantly the Royal Northern and Clyde Yacht Club that hosts a selection of events throughout the year.

The town is friendly and vibrant with a more than a touch of that bygone days atmosphere and life is taken at a respectable pace. There are several places to enjoy mouth-watering dishes made from fresh local produce and a good choice of pubs for that after dinner tipple. Visitors can also explore the magnificent Geilston Garden, the majestic Hill House and take a trip to nearby Helensburgh (by land or water). However most of Rhu’s guests, seem to prefer long lazy walks along the shore or through the awe inspiringly, beautiful surrounding countryside.
