Duke of Cornwall
Restaurants
Duke of Cornwall

Plymouth's most individual Hotel - a perfect combination of traditional and contemporary chic. This famous Victorian gothic hotel built in 1863 has remained a focal point of Plymouth's landscape. The Duke of Cornwall was built by a group of railway company directors to cater for travellers to the region both by rail and sea. The passengers disembarked from the ocean liners arriving from New York in the great western docks at Millbay, and the imposing tower which can still be seen today above the modern buildings still remains a constant point of interest for inquisitive guests who are keen to find out the reason for the towers existence and it's original purpose. It seems that it was purely built for decoration, although the porters would often run up to the tower to see the liners arriving in the port and would then go and greet the passengers and escort them to their accommodation.
The city's Millbay railway station stood directly opposite the hotel where Plymouth Pavilions now stands.
Most of the places of interest listed in the hotel's original brochure still exist today such as, Plymouth Hoe and the Barbican, Dartmoor National Park, Burrator Reservoir, Eddystone Lighthouse, Mount Edgecombe Park and the Dockyard.
The Duke of Cornwall continues to provide the very best of service in it's own timeless and unique style. Now a thriving city centre hotel ideally located for exploring Plymouth Hoe and the surrounding areas. The hotel boasts 72 unique interior designed bedrooms with private en-suite luxury bathrooms.
Our Blue Ribband 2 and AA rosette restaurant serves the finest of contemporary cuisine to be found in the city.
We specialise in weddings and functions in our grand ballroom and six other exquisite fully equipped conference and banqueting suites. The luxury character of Plymouth's most prestigious hotel makes the larger conference, small meeting and special celebration an occasion of great style. Our team of dedicated staff welcome our guests to stay in comfort at The Duke of Cornwall Hotel.

Kitty O'Hanlon's
Bars & Inns, Cafés, Entertainment, Internet Access
Kitty O'Hanlon's

Standing on the oldest known inn site in Plymouth, the Abbey was built here, in St. Andrew's Street, following the demolition of the mediaeval Turk's Head in 1861. St. Andrew's Street itself of course is one of the oldest thoroughfares in the city although since 1979 its line has been interrupted by Plymouth Magistrates' Court. Until the 1930s an ancient terrace of buildings known as Abbey Place ran from the corner of St. Andrew Street, opposite this pub, across to the top of Finewell Street and the Prysten House.
Curiously enough it is this building - the Prysten House - which indirectly gives its name both to Abbey Place and the Abbey Hotel. Long thought, albeit mistakenly, to have been a place with ecclesiastical connections, the house, built by Thomas Yogge in the fifteenth century, was being referred to as the Old Abbey at least 250 years ago. The picture of an old Abbey ruins on the inn sign is no more than an attractive piece of fiction.
Known as Kitty O'Hanlons since 1994, this was the first 'Irish' pub in Plymouth and the best.

The Ship Inn

Our award winning waterside pub has been completely renovated using reclaimed materials, English oak, local stone, and lots of love and affection. The style is strong yet simple, spacious yet cosy; it feels like a proper pub, unfussy, uncomplicated but pleasingly functional.

Enjoy good, fresh, homemade food, great beers and interesting wines, whilst surrounded by wooden floors, old furniture, log fires, bookcases and dozens of local pictures.

We also love beer and our cellar has a good range of regional and local beers, most from brewers that know us well. When you know who brewed it somehow it tastes better! Our main beer comes from Summerskill's just down the road, supported by beers from Princetown Breweries on Dartmoor and others who share our pleasure in beer.

The Souk Moroccan meze bar - restaurant
Restaurants

A visit to the markets & eateries of Morocco inspired my newest venture 'The Souk'. The interior of the restraint is dominated by a glorious kaleidoscope of the tastes & colours of the market place, fresh produce, tinned goods, textiles, clothing & artworks. You name it its all here and you can take it home at the right price too.
On sunny summer days the full length glazed windows are opened up and the waft of spices mixed with smoke tendrils from the beautifully crafted sheeshas intoxicate those strolling along the picturesque quay setting.
A little piece of Morocco is perfectly re-created in this informal eatery. A plethora of north African and middle eastern flavoured dishes in tapas size servings are an excellent way for everyone to experience all there is to offer, complimented by a simple but well chosen wine list.
A magnificent range of teas, pastries and tobaccos cater for those who just want to while away an afternoon or evening imagining they are transported to the heart of Marrakech. The tented ceiling twinkling with a myriad of Moroccan lanterns really comes alive in the evening mixed with the richness of the dark stained and wonderfully upholstered furniture adds a warmth and ambience of a truly unique place.

Yukisan Japanese Restaurant

Yukisan is the first Japanese restaurant in Devon, established in 2004, situated in Plymouth's regenerated Barbican area with its winding cobbled streets. Our own style dishes are specially designed and prepared by our trained chefs.
On our menu you can choose from sushi, yakitori, tempura, lobster, oysters, steak, fish, and sashimi. To drink there are cocktails and sake as well as beer and wine.Try a set meal for the perfect introduction to Japanese food.
At Yukisan there are three distinct dining areas; two spacious oriental dining rooms and a Japanese room, furnished with traditional Japanese cushioned seats at floor level. Some areas of the restaurant can be booked privately and special party menus are available. We are open all day every day of the week and lunch menus are served until 4pm.
