Duke of Cornwall Hotel
| Accommodation | |||||||||
Plymouth's most individual Hotel - a perfect combination of traditional and contemporary chic.
This famous Victorian gothic hotel built in 1863 has remained a focal point of Plymouth's landscape. The Duke of Cornwall was built by a group of railway company directors to cater for travellers to the region both by rail and sea. The passengers disembarked from the ocean liners arriving from New York in the great western docks at Millbay, and the imposing tower which can still be seen today above the modern buildings still remains a constant point of interest for inquisitive guests who are keen to find out the reason for the towers existence and it's original purpose. It seems that it was purely built for decoration, although the porters would often run up to the tower to see the liners arriving in the port and would then go and greet the passengers and escort them to their accommodation. |
