IOS Museum

IOS Museum

Following the severe gales in the winter of 1962, Nornour (Eastern Isles) yielded up some remarkable Romano-British finds, causing some St Mary's residents to establish a local museum. Initially the only viable option was a temporary display in the Wesleyan Chapel during the summer months. After much fundraising and thanks to huge volunteer enthusiasm, the present Museum was built. It opened to the public on July 15th 1967 and received a visit from H.M. Queen Elizabeth II on August 8th 1967.

Our collections are extremely diverse, including material from many wrecks; a wild flower display (during the summer months); Romano-British artefacts; stuffed birds; local art and much more. Thanks to the generosity of local and mainland benefactors, we have received many varied accessions for research and display purposes. We welcome any items of Scillonian provenance or directly relating to the islands.

Phoenix Stained Glass Studio
Visitor Attractions
Phoenix Stained Glass Studio

Oriel Hicks opened the Phoenix studio in the Isles of Scilly off the coast of Cornwall in 1991. She has designed and made stained glass panels and windows to commission all over the UK. Her most recent commission has been to design and make the four windows in the little church on Bryher, which were featured in the BBC2 series "An Island Parish" recently. The commission work is mostly carried out in the winter months, as she makes smaller scale giftware and art pieces for the seasonal tourist market as well as teaching from the studio. Oriel is also a member of the Guild of Ten, a group of Cornwall-based craftsmen with an outlet in Old Bridge St., Truro. The studio is situated in the beautiful Isles of Scilly, 28 miles off the coast of Cornwall, a place which gives inspiration to many artists. It can be visited all year round, and you can watch work in progress, wether that be full size stained glass windows, tiffany glass gifts or unique fused glass dishes, suncatchers and mobiles. There is something to please everyone. The studio runs craft sessions all year round on weekday afternoons. These are suitable for both adults and children from about the age of four. There is always a warm welcome, and Oriel is happy to discuss any requirements for stained glass commissions if you can make it to the studio in person, otherwise, browse through this site, as anything can be sent by post or carrier.

St. Martin's Vineyard
Visitor Attractions
St. Martin's Vineyard

St. Martin's Vineyard has a mild climate, enjoying a favourable position as the most southerly in the UK.
The unique flavour of this wine is influenced by the black granite soil, the pure sea air and above average annual hours of sunshine. This combination ensures the full ripening of the grape varieties selected for the location.
This wine has a light, fresh and delicately fruity flavour. Served lightly chilled, it is a good accompaniment to seafood and light meals, or on its own as an aperitif.
Wine is available for purchase
in the winery.
