EDINBURGH
Situated on the volcanic landscape around an inlet from the Firth of Forth, Edinburgh is amongst the most visually stunning cities in the world. The cityscape is such, you could swear had been torn from the pages of a classic children’s storybook and to wander the city centre streets is an experience in virtual time travel. This vibrant, metropolis, so steeped in history and magic is amongst the most stylish, happening places in Europe and seems set to remain so for generations to come. From the elegance of Princes Street with it’s majestic buildings, awe inspiring monuments and stunning view of Castle Rock to the winding labyrinth that is Holy Rood, it soon becomes plain why Edinburgh has been an inspiration to writers and artists for centuries.
As you would expect from any capital city, Edinburgh has superb shopping, but this is, after all the capital of Scotland and for many the home of all things, cultural, hospitable and magical. This is reflected in the numerous specialist shops selling traditional clothing, confectionary and baked goods, whisky, artisan and historical goods. There is also a plethora of excellent places to dine, the shear diversity of which makes it quite possible to eat yourself around the world and you would find it hard pushed to find a better place than Edinburgh for a pub-crawl. The nightlife is diverse and plentiful from dance music to live music, retro to state-of-the-art; there is something for everyone.
There are heritage sites in abundance, with Edinburgh Castle winning pride of place. A great way to see the city is by taking one of the several historic walking tours available, including a truly fascinating haunted Edinburgh tour. Away from the City lies the stunning Lothian countryside with its endless choice of fascinating walks and outdoor pursuits. One of the most popular locations is Port Edgar Marina, situated just west of the Forth Bridge. With its 300 berths and superb facilities for yachting and boating it is an ideal base for exploring the nearby islands. The sheltered South Queensferry bay has become a centre for water-sports and sailing tuition and the fishing and angling opportunities in the area are second to none.
In truth one could fill several volumes describing what Edinburgh has to offer its visitors and spend several years trying to do it all. It is a city that will have you returning time after time and one that will remain in your memory forever. There really is nowhere quite like it anywhere else in the world and that’s the truth.
